Reading: FIRST AID FOR BURNS

The content is New Senior English for China Student’s Book5 Unit 5 First Aid,
period 1. Warming up, pre-reading &reading. This reading passage titled First Aid for Burns
is a text from a book called First Aid for the Famil
y. The passage is the first period of the unit. In my opinion, it is very important for the Ss to learn because the reading material is relevant to their life experience and it will arouse students’ interest, and develop their comprehensive language competence. The reading passage first introduces the importance of the skin to our body, then introduces types of burns, characteristics of burns and certain steps of first aid treatments. It is hoped that through the passage, the Ss will know how to perform first aid treatment and do first aid calmly during an emergency.
1) Knowledge objectives
Students will master the important words and sentences patterns of this unit through this period: injury, bleed, organ, poison, swell, damage, wound, mild, squeeze, symptom, etc.
2) Ability objectives
Students are able to use what they’ve learnt to do first aid treatment for burns correctly.
Students can learn the reading skill of getting the main idea of each part by heading.
3) Moral objectives
Students will increase their awareness of the importance of knowing about first aid.
Students can develop the sense of cooperative learning.
4.Teaching key points(教学重点)
1). Students will learn and master some important words, phrases.
2). Students can get the knowledge of First aid for burns.
5. Teaching difficult points (教学难点)
1). Students use what they’ve learnt to do first aid treatment for burns correctly.
2).Students can develop their reading abilities.
As Senior2 Ss, they are at different levels of English fluency, some of them have lost interest in English. So during the lesson, I arrange a variety of activities to let all of them join in to attract their interest and let them be confident and taste the joy of success.

Step1. Lead-in (3mins)

Purpose: To arouse the students’ interest and lead to the topic---First aid.
First, I’ll lead in the topic by asking a student to pretend that he has his ankle sprained, and ask the students if they know how to treat the sprained ankle.
Then let the students watch a video to know how to treat a sprained ankle properly, thus introducing the topic of first aid. More importantly, this activity will attract students’ attention and arouse their interest.
Step2. Warming up by brainstorming
Purpose: To broaden students’ thinking on first aid.
First, I will give students one minute to think of words about accident and first aid. Then invite one student from each group to write their words on the board. The person who writes the most is the winner. This is a task-based activity by brainstorming to broaden students’ thinking on first aid. Besides, it is a competition to check their vocabulary.
Purpose: To lead to the reading passage---First aid for burns.
Show the students a picture, and set two questions. What happened to the little girl? What kind of first aid would you perform in this situation? In this way, I can switch the topic to first aid for burns.
In this part, I’ll develop students’ reading ability and let them learn different reading skills.
Purpose: To develop students’ ability of getting the main idea of the passage quickly.
Give the students 1 minute to skim the subtitles and ask them to put the topics in right order, which makes the Ss know the structure of the text.
Purpose: To develop students’ ability of scanning and getting information based on the structure of the reading passage.
Ask students to work with a partner and tell if the following statements are true or false. Tell them that they do not need to read the text word by word to find the information. Ask them to tell which part of the text they need to look at. Students give answers and reasons based on the structure of reading passage.
Purpose: To get further understanding of the passage.
This is also a task-based activity. I will design different tasks to check students’ understanding of the passage by filling in the blanks, choosing and matching.
Step 5.Post- reading
Purpose: To get students know how to give first aid in different situations.
To develop students’ sense of cooperative learning.
To arouse students’ interest and develop their spoken English.
In this part, I will design 2 questions for students to choose. The first one is to put what they’ve learnt into practice---how to perform first aid for burns. The purpose of the second question is to broaden students’ minds and most importantly, tell them how to help themselves escape in the fire. Both of them are Close to the students’ lives.
I am going to divide students into several groups to have a discussion. Ask several group leaders to report their results. In this part, the students will learn to cooperate with others. And they can put what they have learnt into practice.
Purpose: To summarize the important points of this lesson.
To make students fully understand what they learnt.
Ask students what they have learnt in this lesson. A student retells the passage and others can make a complement. This is a necessary step to make students fully understand the important points of this lesson.
I will show the learning aims again on PPT for students to check if they have achieved. Meantime, evaluation items are provided for students to score themselves. If students did well, they’ll be confident and surely become more enthusiasm in learning English. If not, they will find out the spot they need promote next time. Evaluation will make students know their own progress and build confidence. It can provide the teacher with feedback on the teaching and learning process and improve the quality of their teaching as well.
1. Get more about first aid from the newspaper, magazine or the Internet.
2. Review the text carefully and find out the important and difficult words and expressions to you.
After class, I hope students can do some further reading on first aid to enrich their knowledge and improve their reading ability.
